Steel Minimill Construction and Start-Up Support

The Challenge

Steel Mini-Mill A large equipment manufacturer in charge of building a new steel minimill was experiencing construction delays and increased contractor costs because of difficulty in managing contractor crews. A project of large proportions, this turnkey facility includes buildings, cranes, caster maintenance, ladle repair facilities, roll grinding shop, water treatment facilities and associated support equipment. When complete, the mill will receive scrap metal from throughout the Midwest region, melt it, cast it and roll the slabs of steel into thin plates and sheets. The product will then be supplied to steel retail distributors for sale to fabricators and manufacturers.

The PCT Solution

Steel Mini-Mill When PCT Engineered Systems became a part of this project, the building was complete, major equipment was set and commissioning was 6 months away. To remedy the OEM's problem, PCT offered engineering resources including expertise in construction management, project control and steel making processes. Our knowledge of local machining and fabrication companies allowed PCT to lower the cost of custom made parts by quickly routing them to area shops for quicker turn around.

PCT's role on the team was to provide the customer with multi-craft construction crews and technical support during the final stages of installation, and cold and hot commissioning. Our flexibility and broad support base allowed PCT's engineering staff to become involved in many areas of this extensive project from construction to material expediting, design and documentation.

PCT assisted this international OEM in gaining control of their contractor costs and drastically reducing their additional contractor charges due to overtime work.
